A Problem of Inheritance
Officially, the title and dignity of Baron d'Estrées died with Amédé-Jules (1822-1888), the brother of Gustave (1818-1888). Unfortunately, for the family he only issued females.Nevertheless, the title and dignity could be conferred to another branch of the family closest in relation to the last holder of the title. Since France become a Republic after the Franco-Prussian War (1870), there was no titular monarch to make a new appointment.
