Braccio FILIPPI

Braccio Filippi was the mythical founder of the FILIPPI dynasty. In 787 he was invested as Knight by Charlemagne. He belonged to a patrician family from Florence, Italy who claimed to be descendants of Quinto Marcio Filippi di Montefilippi. Quinto fought with Julius Caesar.

Also, the founder of GONDI family, Orlando di Bellicozzo, was a descendant of Braccio Filippi. Orlando was a member of the Council of Florence in 1197. The family took its surname from one of his great-grandsons, Gondo di Ricovero, whom we find among the signers of a treaty between the Republic of Florence and Genoa in 1241 (Source 2)

A Problem of Inheritance

Officially, the title and dignity of Baron d'Estrées died with Amédé-Jules (1822-1888) Philippy de Bucelly d'Estrées, the brother of Gustave (1818-1888). Unfortunately, for the family he only issued females.

Nevertheless, the title and dignity could be conferred to another member of the family closest in relation to the last holder of the title. Since France become a Republic after the Franco-Prussian War (1870), there was no titular monarch to make a new appointment.

The branch closest in line of succession to the title and  dignity of Baron d'Estrées would be that of Philippe-Jules d'HERVILLY. If, his line become extinct, it would pass to another relation.

Possible Order of Succession to the Title of Baron d'Estrées

1) The branch of  Philippe Jules d'HERVILLY

2) The branch of André-Marcel d'HERVILLY

3) The branch of Albert-Jules-Emilie DEBOUT (1841), son of Anne-Julie-Albertine Phillpy d'Estrées (1838)

4) The branch of  Berthe DEBOUT (1844-1884), son of Anne-Julie-Albertine Philippy d'Estrées (1838)

5) The branch of  Louis Emile WARTEL, 1834 (grandson of Gabrielle-Constance-Marie Philippy de Bucelly d'Estrées and son of Atala-Therese ANDRIEN)

6) The branch of Jules WARTEL, 1835 (grandson of Gabrielle-Constance-Marie Philippy de Bucelly d'Estrées and son of Atala Therese ANDRIEN)

1) The coat of arms of the House of Philippy was taken from "Armorial des principales maisons de familles du royaume ..., Volume 2"  by  M. Dubuisson (1757) and adopted to fit the appropriate rank of a Baron in the Kingdom of France.

2) Information on the Italian family name of FILIPPI was taken from the Italian "Wikipedia" entry on Braccio Filippi. (http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filippi_%28famiglia%29)

3) The genealogy on the Philippy in France was taken from "Les Phillipi Bucelly d'Estrées (1544-1942)" by André-Pierre FRANTZEN, The entire work can be found at the National Library of France (BNF).

4) The coat of arms of the Gallier family and Gallier de Saint Sauveur was taken from the "Armorial de Dauphiné" (1867) and available through Google Books.

5) According to the study of Mr. Jean GALLIAN, the de Gallier coat of arms contains three cocks and six vertical lines. The study of Henri Jougla de Morenas (Grand Armorial de France) shows that the Gallier de Veaussert, de Saint Sauveur et de Chalon used a coat of arms that was "D'az au chevron d'argent accompagne de 3 coquilles du mesme et un chef d'argent chargé de 3 roses de gue" (Volume 4, p. 93). This description conforms to the one published by Mr. Gallian and the one in the "Armorial de Dauphiné". The motto of the family was SPEM MUTARE NESCIO.
